Why are old people attracted
to cultural history more than young people?
A simple question that no one
put effort to think of.
A co-worker showed me some
videos he took during his vacation in Korea where locals were performing
cultural music, an old man stood up and started dancing with a smile on his
face, happiness was printed on his body and the way he moved, even though he
has no idea where to move and how to move, all he cared about was dancing to
their rituals.
There’s
a tough bond between elders and culture. They were raised to cherish their
history. They –know- what its worth.
I
may be a bit jealous of them. There’s nothing more important than knowing where
you belong, where you were raised and having a vague vision of what’s going on
around you.
Why don’t we, the younger
youth, feel the cultural and history of our country in our souls? Why are we so
distant from feeling patriotism? Is it the media, I wonder.
Growing up I was, and as
every other young boy or girl, exposed to Hollywood and the American lifestyle.
Without me noticing I found myself more interested in their culture than my
own. I was no longer interested in our music and what my own culture was
providing.
One day though something made
me question why I was stooping to another country’s origins. Then I realized
how important one should be pertinent to one’s culture.
Let’s imagine this together;
if the elders of our generations passed away, what would there be left?
The traditions of foods,
languages and basic culture will die along with them, unless they took the
liberty of teaching us those traditions.
If my grandparents, who were
born in Uzbek and migrated to Saudi Arabia and became Saudis, died, will their
culture die along with them for good? My parents did not think to teach and commute their
language to us (me and my siblings), they did not think of the day of them
dying and therefore taking their culture along with them.
If
culture died, what would there be left?
Are
we going to be the lost souls who wander around with no origins? With no basic
fundamentals?
Where
do we belong, and how do we know this is the right place for us to be living in?
Is
it time to travel around the world to find out answers?
